SUMMER SAT ON THE BENCH crossing and uncrossing her ankles, careful to keep her back straight and her knees tight together the way her grandmother had taught her. Beside her Abby plucked at the skirt of her best church dress, both nervous and so excited she practically vibrated. She swung her white patent leather Mary Janes with the little heels, and Summer laid a hand on her lap to still her legs. Abby looked up at her with such hope shining in her eyes, it didn’t matter how nervous her stomach felt; there was no way Summer was walking out of the court house until she and Travis were married.

Oh, God, she was going to marry Travis Southerland.

He stood beside them, holding a folder with their marriage license. They’d gone to Roanoke for the license and vows otherwise the whole town would know they were married before they had a chance to tell their families. She’d understood and agreed with not telling anyone ahead of time, but part of her wished Autumn was with her.

She glanced up, wondering if he felt the same way. His family was so close; surely he missed having them there. If he did, she couldn’t tell. Seeing him standing tall and proud in his dress uniform, his jaw strong and chiseled to an angular plane, she couldn’t tell what he was thinking about anything.

The brass buttons on his dark dress uniform jacket shone and his blue pants were pressed to a tight crease, not daring to wrinkle. She’d been surprised when he picked them up that morning wearing his uniform, and Abby’s eyes had gone owlish at the sight of all of his bars and medals. She should have known he’d be in uniform. He was proper, respectable and so handsome it stole her breath, his broad shoulders and tight waist accentuated by the cut of the uniform. He’d been to the barber and his dark hair was short enough to clear his collar.

She had no idea how she was going to stand beside him to say their vows and pretend like she belonged there. Surely the clerk or judge or someone was bound to step up and say there had been some kind of mistake. Wearing her floral dress with the nipped in waist and full skirt, she felt completely underdressed. The dress was nice enough for church, but paled next to his uniform. It was what she had. Her best dress was the one she’d worn to Jude and Autumn’s wedding. It hardly seemed appropriate to wear that. Instead she’d settled on her best church dress and prayed no one who saw her called her out for being a sham.

The heavy, dark, wood door swung open and a friendly older woman peered around it. “Miss Maddox, Mr. Southerland,” she said, smiling. “The judge is ready for you now.”

She looked at them expectantly, and Summer stood and tried to make her legs move. In the end it was Abby who broke through her paralysis. Her little girl took her hand and tugged her through the doorway toward her new family.
